Common Q & A about Muay Thai:
1 – What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai or Thai boxing is the cultural martial art of Thailand. The origin of Muay Thai dates back several hundred years. It was developed as a form of close-combat that used the entire body as a weapon. Muay Thai uses elbows, hands, feet, and knees. This is how it earned the nickname “The Science of Eight Limbs”. Today, the art of Muay Thai is finally reaping rewards and recognition. It is becoming quite popular in many countries throughout the world and professional fighters in martial arts, K-1, and submission fighting all agree that Muay Thai is an essential part of being an all-around skilled fighter.
2 – What equipment is required?
If you have a pair of hand wraps, bring them with you. Although they are not required for your first few classes, it is recommended that you eventually purchase a pair and train with them to prevent strain and injuries to your wrists, fingers and hands over time. If you enjoy your first class, you should purchase your own boxing gloves, hand wraps, skipping rope, shin guard, and mouth guard.
3 – Is training to compete mandatory?
No. Only a small percentage of our members are competitive athletes. The majority are here to learn new skills, lose/maintain weight, release stress, and to have some fun in the process!
4 - Will I get hurt?
There is always a risk of getting hurt in combat sports, however this is the exception and not the rule. Our staff at Aguiar Muay Thai & Fitness Studio ensure that safety is the number one priority. New members will be taught the fundamentals and will be overseen by the instructors to minimize any injuries.
5 – How often should I train?
Training at least 2 days per week is recommended in order to receive the physical benefits. Classes are held Monday to Saturday, so should you desire, you may attend class up to 6 times per week at no additional cost. The more you train, the more you will gain.
6 – Do you offer private classes?
Yes. Private lessons are a valuable way for students to quickly improve their skills. To find out more information, contact Carlos Aguiar at 204-999-7860.
7 – Am I too old for this?
Absolutely not. Our students range in age from 6 to 65+. Currently we have one student who is 68 years young who trains at least 3 times per week. In the beginning any new member may find the workout to be tough. Eventually, with the help and guidance of our staff at the Aguiar Muay Thai & Fitness Studio, and the encouragement of your fellow students, you will be able to complete all of the classes and workouts.
